What to Expect

Liquid rhinoplasty, also known as nonsurgical rhinoplasty or a liquid nose job, is a cosmetic procedure that involves the use of injectable fillers to reshape and contour the nose, enhancing projection, proportions, profile, and overall appearance of your nose. The results of a nonsurgical nose job are a subtle change in the appearance of the nose in a manner that helps compliment ones facial features, rather than dramatic changes in the shape or appearance of the nose. Nasal irregularities such as bumps, humps or bony projections, depressions along the bridge of the nose are easily improved using this treatment. This nonsurgical treatment may also be used to correct asymmetry of the nose, to elongate a short nose along the nasal bridge, and to improve projection of a downturned or droopy nasal tip (a condition called ptosis of the tip of the nose).

Non Surgical rhinoplasty offers numerous advantages over a traditional surgical nose job, which is an invasive surgery procedure where a plastic surgeon makes incisions on or around the nose in order to change the shape of the nose. First, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that can be done with minimal discomfort or pain, and without the need for general anesthesia. This quick procedure requires little to no downtime and no recovery period, allowing you to resume your daily activities almost immediately. Additionally, compared to traditional rhinoplasty, it offers a reversible option as the effects of the fillers can be adjusted or dissolved if desired.

In this procedure, a topical anesthetic or numbing cream is applied to the skin for several minutes to ensure patient comfort during the procedure. The skin is cleansed using an antimicrobial solution, followed by the doctor's careful placement of hyaluronic acid filler into targeted areas of the nose under the skin, to sculpt and refine the shape of the nose. The results of liquid rhinoplasty are typically immediate, and last anywhere from 6-12 months.

After the procedure, temporary side effects such as mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection sites, which are temporary, improve with ice applied to the treatment area, and typically resolve within a few days. In almost all cases however, you can generally resume your normal activities soon after the procedure. For best results and to avoid serious side effects from this procedure, it is highly recommended that you see only a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon for this nose filler injections. These two healthcare professionals are the best trained in the most effective and safest injection techniques for nose filler injections, and are also the best equipped at managing any complications that although rare, may arise from this procedure due to their extensive understanding of facial anatomy and expertise in the comprehensive management of patients after complex surgical procedures.

Types of Dermal Fillers for the Nose

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are the most common type of filler products used for liquid rhinoplasty injection treatments. While there are many different brands of hyaluronic acid filler, use of a stiffer or more rigid filler that swells minimally is the best way to achieve results that are long lasting and natural-looking, without over correction which could result in larger than desired nose proportions. At the California Center for Dermatologic Surgery, Dr. Carlson uses only hyaluronic acid filler products that are approved by the FDA for cosmetic use. Read below to find out more about the different filler options used for non-surgical rhinoplasty.

  • Juvederm Voluma XC is another hyaluronic acid filler product used for nonsurgical rhinoplasty. Given its ability to retain its shape upon injection, it is a good option for improving the contour of the nose. Results last up to 1 year.

  • The RHA collection of hyaluronic acid fillers includes RHA4, the densest product within this collection. Use of a dense product ensures adequate retention of filler in the areas of placement, without spreading to other sites on the nose, thus allowing for results that can last up to 1 year.

  • Restylane LYFT™ is the firmest of the restylane dermal filler products, and a good treatment option for liquid rhinoplasty. When used for non-surgical rhinoplasty, this product lasts between 6 to 12 months.

Is Non-invasive Nose Job with Fillers Right for Me?

When considering liquid rhinoplasty or any cosmetic procedure, it is important to consult with a qualified healthcare professional with extensive expertise in and experience with non-surgical nose jobs, such as a facial plastic surgeon or a dermatologic surgeon. These aesthetic healthcare professionals are your best resources for helping you decide if you are the right candidate for this treatment versus whether you would benefit more from a more invasive rhinoplasty approach. During your initial consultation, your doctor will evaluate anatomy of your facial features, listen to your aesthetic concerns regarding your nose, and will provide you with an individualized treatment plan based on your aesthetic goals. In general, individuals who have had allergic reactions to hyaluronic acid filler products in the past are not good candidates for this treatment. Persons who have had prior surgical treatments on the nose may also not be good candidates for this treatment, as prior surgery may change the anatomy and location of important structures such as arteries in the nose, making liquid rhinoplasty a more dangerous procedure due to risk of placement of filler in an undesired location on the nose. Although this is a safe procedure when performed by an experienced physician, serious side effects can result with improper technique or if dermal filler injections are accidentally placed within an artery in the skin on and around the nose. For best results and to avoid serious side effects and and complications from this procedure, it is highly recommended that you see only a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon for this procedure rather than obtain treatment at a medspa by a non-physician provider.
